Empathy

If you have suffered, does that automatically make you better at understanding someone else—or can pain make you turn away? Jamie hears the girl’s despair because he is “sharing his pain”, but empathy also asks him to act. When compassion demands effort, courage and sacrifice, is feeling another person’s suffering enough, or must it change what you do?
