Rosaline is memorable because Romeo’s earlier, unreturned love for her shapes his first image as a lovesick, self-dramatising young man. Though she never speaks, her “fair” yet “hard-hearted” image makes her a distant figure whose refusal exposes gap between Romeo’s intense passion and mutual love.
